To be most effective a group should consist of a blend of character types. Typically a mix of fighters (Warriors, Paladins, Rangers), healers (Clerics) and spell casters (Wizards and such). There has been a lot of rumors and information about grouping with different level characters. Verant has designed the game to encourage players to group with fairly close levels. Our experience has been that this isn't as much of a problem as many people think if you attack the right targets. We have successfully grouped a level 6 with a level 11 and both gained experience ok - the key was to attack tough monsters (red to the level 6, tough yellow? to the level 11). As Verant stated this range of levels changes. Newbies must stay very close to their own level while players in the 30's probably have a lot more freedom.
When in battle the fighters should try to step in front of the monsters and taunt them. Try and keep the attention of the monsters so they don t switch to the spellcasters. The healers should watch the fighters and keep them healthy. The spellcasters should be willing to step in and soak up some damage if the fighters are about to die. If you are toe to toe with a monster and you are nearly dead (down to two bubbles) take a slow step back. Do NOT run. The monsters will chase their target. If you run then you prevent the others from being able to target and attack what is killing you. Take slow steps back and allow the monster to re-target onto another party member.
I've seen spellcasters blast the monster, drawing them to the party (excellent tactic), then even with the fighters standing between them and the monster still be hit by the monster. Once the fighter has positioned himself between you and the monster take a step or two back before you nuke them again.
